An important premise in Gestalt psychology is the notion that the whole contains within it a tendency towards unity. It moves towards an elegant simplicity. The creative act seeks unity in variety. Finding simplicity in complexity is another way of putting it. Diffusion may lead to integration, leading to more diffusion, then more integration – this succession of states makes up the cycle of life and generation. This sense of the whole may be one of inner satisfaction, primarily, or it may be an unfolding of potentialities.
